UBAC

The Other Side

Touring 's skiing is all about venturing beyond the horizon to find the line that no one has ever skied. All it takes is a pair of skis and a climbing partner to discover what lies beyond. That's what the UBAC collection is for.

In the 1970s, skiers began venturing onto the other side of the mountain. Anselme Baud climbed the Mont Blanc massif with nothing but a pair of skis and a desire to explore the unknown, descending slopes that had previously been climbed only on foot. He blazed a trail. Every winter, skiers stand at the summit of a line that he was the first to envision. While ski designs have evolved, that spirit has remained intact. Today, a new generation continues this quest on UBAC skis, carving its own path in the heart of the vast wilderness.

UBAC 89

The high side of the mountain.

The hours spent climbing are rewarded by the few minutes spent at the top. The Ubac 89 is designed for those peaks that require this much effort to reach.

Climbing peaks for hours to savor a few fleeting minutes of descent requires rare determination. That’s what drives Sandy Tschofen to set out at dawn to carve her own trail as the slope rises. The 89 was designed precisely to make these high altitudes accessible. Lightweight and smooth on the ascent, yet equipped with the stiffness needed to tackle the spring snow waiting at the bottom of the slopes. The intensity of the run lingers long after the descent, reflecting the effort it took to reach that point.

UBAC 95

The far side of the mountain.

The best days always end where no one expected to take off their skis. The Ubac 95 is designed for skiers who set out in the morning with an entire mountain range to explore.

With skis on his feet and no idea where the day will end, Mathis Dumas sets out into uncharted terrain. He reads the snow as he goes, heading up the ridge he spotted from below before switching to a hidden line, then another one right behind it. The 95 handles everything the day has in store for him, gliding through cold snow and holding its edge as soon as the slope hardens. Going this far is a choice he makes anew on every outing.

UBAC 102

The steep mountainside.

A challenging descent requires meticulous preparation—a plan that matures over the course of the seasons and is put into action during the hours spent climbing. The Ubac 102 is designed to tackle that first turn with complete confidence.

For Victor Lourdel, a slope may require an entire season of contemplation before he dares to set his edges on it. He patiently observes it from the opposite side, identifies snowdrifts and rocky sections, waits for the ideal night of refreezing, and then begins the ascent with the descent already fully mapped out in his mind. It’s that very first turn that confirms—or disproves—his intuition, setting the tone for the rest of the face. Thanks to its firm flex and long edge hold, the 102 locks into that decisive turn, anchoring itself firmly where the snow is hard and the commitment is total.

UBAC 110

The open slope of the mountain.

On the wild side of a mountain range, the run takes shape with each turn, in the moment. The Ubac 110 is designed to tackle this terrain and ski it at full speed.

There are skiers who climb relentlessly until the valley fades behind them. Such is the case with Pierre Hourticq, who tirelessly seeks out virgin slopes and untouched powder. He plunges into the slope, carving his line turn after turn, and picks up speed as soon as the slope opens up. Wide and fast on his 110-mm waist, he cuts through the deep powder and sends sprays of snow into the wind-sculpted snow. Solitude gives him strength. Every choice is his own, just like the trail he leaves behind.

MATHIS DUMAS

"UBAC skis give you the freedom to carve anywhere: light enough to climb quickly, sturdy enough to let loose on the descent. The perfect ski for those who live in the mountains year-round."
