Why does a single shape cover the entire mountain?
A shaper goes back to the same ski twice and tweaks two millimeters that no one else notices. In the “Shape” series, we break down choices like that. Why a shape can hold an edge firmly and still float. What we look for—and what we let go of.
One ski for the whole mountain.
An all-mountain ski has to do it all—because you want to do it all. Carve through hard-packed snow at dawn, float through snow softened by the midday sun, and race your friends through the trees along the edge of the run. We design it to transition from one to the next without a second thought—responsive from one turn to the next, stable as it speeds along. At the Lab, we test it on every type of snow above Chamonix, from the first ray of sunlight to the last. What you’ll find here has stood the test from the first icy run to the last—the one that ends at the bar.
Do you like to carve beautiful curves on piste, but never say no to a bit of powder between the trees? You don't want to invest in two pairs of skis to switch between groomed snow and light off-piste? The All-Mountain ski, as its name suggests, is designed for the whole ski area.
What is an all-mountain ski?
A ski designed to perform in a variety of conditions: groomed snow, prepared snow, moguls, the edge of the run, and light off-piste. Its waist width is generally between 80 and 100 mm. It’s narrow enough to grip on hard snow, yet wide enough to prevent it from sinking as soon as the snow softens.
Which ZAG all-mountain ski should you choose?
Three models. The AROC for precision and speed: pronounced camber, stiff flex, 85.5–87 mm waist width, medium turning radius. The MATA Ti for carving performance: 90 mm waist width, Titanal baseplate, medium camber and flex, short turning radius. The SLAP 92 for freedom: 92 mm waist width, double rocker, medium flex, no titanal, maximum playability.
What size all-mountain skis should you choose?
For responsiveness and tight turns, choose your usual size or 5 cm shorter. For stability at high speeds and wide turns, choose your usual size or 5 cm longer. The AROC and MATA Ti range from 153 to 185 cm, while the SLAP 92 ranges from 160 to 185 cm.
What are the best " Bindings " for all-mountain skiing?
Classic alpine Binding s are the standard: there are no weight restrictions since you use the lifts to get up the mountain. A DIN range of 4–12 is more than sufficient for intermediate skiers; powerful or aggressive skiers should aim for DIN 14 or 16. If you want to keep the option of occasionally using skins to ascend, a hybrid Binding combines an alpine toe piece with a climbing system, such as the ATK HY.
Are all-mountain skis suitable for a skier who is new to off-piste skiing?
Yes, that's actually what it's designed to do. A medium flex and a double rocker forgive timing mistakes and make it easier to pivot. The SLAP 92 is the most forgiving of the three; the AROC, with its stiff flex and pronounced camber, requires a more decisive edge. The MATA is for an insane carving experience.
